Our Communities: Children and Young People with SEND

In year one of the Sleep Talkers project, our initial focus was on the children and young people with SEND community.

%

Over 80% of children with SEND experience a sleep problem during their childhood

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) typically sleep less (17-43 mins a day) than their prospective cohorts

Many parents feel their children will “grow out” of their sleep problem, or that it’s due to their child’s “condition”

Children with poor sleep in pre-school have an increased likelihood of an ADHD diagnosis

Children’s sleep problems are associated with high levels of parental stress and increase the risk of day time behavioural problems (Journal of Paediatric Psychology and E-Journal of Applied Psychology)

Sleep deprivation can leave parents feeling isolated, lonely and can affect their mental and physical wellbeing
