5 Ideas A Teacher Can Do To Encourage Good Sleep Hygiene

Talk!

Talk to your class about what helps them get a good night’s sleep.

What time do they go to sleep?

What time do they wake up?

Do they have supper? If so, what is it?

Talk about what they do to relax? Have a session exploring different ideas such as music, drawing, jigsaws, bathtime and breathing exercises. Empower them to know how to relax themselves at the end of the day.

Talk about routines. Children have a routine everyday at school that you implement. Ask them about their evenings and think about what one thing they could do each evening such as reading which will be the start of a bedtime routine for them.

Move!

Take your class out for 30 minutes each day, ideally in the morning. This could be their 15 minute breaktime plus completing a daily mile or you could complete a lesson outside! Spending time in natural daylight helps us to regulate our circadian rhythm and produce melatonin at the right times.

Get plenty of exercise during the day. Encourage children to play and run around at breaktimes. Can you have class discussions about ideas they could do whilst outside? Also, try and do PE as often as possible to ensure children are getting regular exercise.
